The Fell Pony Society

Registered Charity, Number 1104945

Patron: Her Majesty The Queen.

The Fell Pony Society is a Company Limited by Guarantee 3233346.

The Fell Pony Society's aim is to foster and keep pure the old breed of pony which has roamed the northern fells for years and to circulate knowledge and general information about the pony breed. The Society deals with the Registration of Ponies, applications for Membership, and export matters, and produces two Magazines per year, lists of ponies for sale and a regular calendar of events.

Its two major shows, the Stallion and Colt Show in May and the Breed Show in August, are held at Dalemain.

Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome

The Society worked with the veterinary school at Liverpool University who researched Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome which was found to affect Fell, Dales and some coloured cob foals. A genetic marker test was devised and became available in 2010.

Brexit

I vowed not to use the bl***y word but as it affects the registrations of Fell ponies in many European countries I have to mention that it's been a huge headache for the FPS secretary in 2021. Among the things the mother society cannot do since the UK chose to flounce out of the EU are: to register foals; license stallions; and record transfers of ownership, if the ponies and people involved are in an EU country.

The Society is about to join an international video conference with its daughter society in the Netherlands to try to arrange new procedures so that new foals and new stallions and new owners are not lost to the breed.
